Our Approach
How We Work
We believe technology should be guided by the communities it serves, not the other way around.
AI as a Community Tool
Artificial intelligence is powerful, but power without direction serves whoever holds it. We work with organizations to ensure AI tools are shaped by the people who will use them and the communities they affect.
This means starting with listening, not with technology. Understanding what questions matter before building the tools that answer them. The most effective AI integration begins with clarity about who benefits and how.
Civic Experience
Years of direct participation in local government, including service on a city plan commission, have given us firsthand understanding of how municipal decisions are made, where processes break down, and how community voices get lost in bureaucratic procedures.
This experience informs everything we do. When we help organizations navigate government processes, we bring practical knowledge of what works, what the actual timelines look like, and where the real decision points are.
Challenging Assumptions with Data
Our research has consistently revealed that widely held beliefs about vulnerable populations often diverge significantly from the evidence. When we built tools for analyzing qualitative interviews, the data told stories that contradicted institutional expectations.
We believe in following the data honestly, even when it challenges comfortable narratives. The tools we build are designed to surface what is actually happening, not what any stakeholder expects or hopes to find.
The Funding Problem
There is a real tension between research funded by large institutions and the communities being studied. Funders have their own priorities, timelines, and preferred narratives. Communities have lived experiences that may not align with those frameworks.
BrainDance AI operates independently. We are accountable to the data and the community, not to a funder's preferred conclusion. This independence allows us to ask harder questions and present findings that might otherwise be smoothed over.
Connecting Stakeholders
The most impactful work happens at intersections. Community groups, data sources, government procedures, academic research, and technical tools each hold a piece of a larger picture. Our core value is bridging these into actionable relationships.
We help organizations find their allies, access the data that supports their work, navigate the procedures that affect their communities, and build the technical tools that make it all visible and sustainable.
